When Lightning Strikes the Soul

"But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life." John 4:14 NLT

The sky darkens as a summer storm rolls across the prairie, bringing billowing black clouds and distant thunder.

Heavy rain pounds the earth, while brittle grass and cracked ground absorb moisture like thirsty sponges.

Birds swoop into the deluge, foraging for seeds beneath the lilac tree. They chirp and vocalize as they relish the life-giving rain, heedless of their soaked wings.

Bright petunias turn colourful faces skyward, seeking wet abundance often lacking in this arid landscape.

City noises shift as streets run with water, vehicle wheels splashing puddles in pursuit of shelter.

I sit protected beneath the tin roof of my patio, which usually shelters me from prairie summer heat and now shields me from the soaking sky.

Lightning flashes brighten the darkness in fragmented moments, sharpening colours around me as rain drips from large, green leaves beside my shelter.

Wind shifts, and a cool breeze sprays fine mist across the patio onto my upturned face. I relish relief from stifling summer heat.

I breathe deeply as ozone and wet earth fill my nostrils. My body relaxes with a sigh as I drink in the sights and sounds, pausing in the rush of my day to thank God for nature's beauty and the rain's cycle.

As the natural world pauses and rests, allowing refreshing rain to renew life and growth, we need nature's cue to pause and rest in our busy rhythms.

Just as the earth becomes dry and brittle, requiring fresh soaking of life-giving rain, we need the same pause and rest to allow our parched souls to soak in the Holy Spirit's refreshing rain, bringing clarity and restoration from life's storms.

Then Jesus said, Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 NLT.

When did you last sit still?

Sit at Jesus' feet?

Sit and allow the Holy Spirit to soak you, like rain falling on parched soil?

When life's storms roll into our circumstances, we need to pause and bask in the gentle rain that refreshes our souls.

"Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:35b NLT

We live busy lives with technology that denies us quiet time to rest, relax, and bask. We grow thirsty. We become parched.

We easily become spiritually dry. We need the Holy Spirit's refreshing breeze to stop us in our tracks and quench our thirst.

When we allow God's Spirit to refresh us, we see the world's bright colours again, hear life's songs around us, and relish the storm's beauty rather than fearing menacing clouds beyond our control.

The same God gives us the nourishing refreshment of rain to quench our parched souls and breathe new life into our day.

We can trust the God who loves us, saves us, and shelters us from life's chaos.

Take a moment today to pause, breathe deeply, and rest your weary soul.

As you take in natural beauty around you, thank God for the Holy Spirit's refreshing in your life, and drink deeply of His thirst-quenching rain.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What burdens do you need to lay at Jesus’ feet today?

  2. Can you find five minutes in your day today to stop, pause, and focus on Jesus?

  3. Where is your life feeling parched right now, needing fresh Holy Spirit rain? Ask God to fill that space with living water today.
